Manish Amin: Co-founder and CIO, Yatra.c...

Manish Amin, co-founder and chief information officer (CIO), Yatra.com, aims to create a platform that caters to the needs of every type of traveller, and technology will be central to achieving this.

Amin has close to 30 years of experience in the travel and information technology sectors. In 2006, he co-founded Yatra along with his colleague, Dhruv Shringi, with the aim of making travel easy and hassle-free. Today, Yatra.com is the one of the largest online travel agencies, with more than 83,000 hotels registered in India and over 800,000 hotels world over. “I do all it takes to make Yatra the perfect one-stop shop for travel,” he says.

According to Amin, several emerging technologies are leading towards a more convenient, automated and personalised form of travel. Virtual reality provides an immersive experience to people wanting to explore a destination and may soon become the dominant way of choosing the appropriate holiday. Cloud computing is another emerging technology that can be used to store and process large amounts of data, thereby reducing operational expenses and increasing efficiency.

At Yatra, he oversees the research and development team and is responsible for new product development, building mobile technology and managing data centres. Prior to this, he worked with Ebookers.com for nearly 15 years, and was responsible for managing the company’s website and multi-location call centres.

For Amin, building and launching Yatra from scratch is perhaps the most memorable part of his career. Having worked previously in the UK, he found the Indian market to be completely new and different, with contrasting consumer preferences and buying patterns than that in European countries. “Matching our offerings with the needs of Indian customers was exciting and challenging at the same time,” he observes.

Over the years, Amin has become more open to challenges and learning new things. He believes that the three imperatives for being a leader are to know how to manage yourself, your network and your team. “While I push my team to achieve targets, I also believe in the need to develop a humane connection with them, to encourage their growth and development,” he says.

Amin has a BTEC National in business management from South Thames College, London. Leisure for him is catching up on shows on Netflix and heading out with his family. A football lover, he tries to squeeze in a game whenever he can.
