Sanjay Kalirona: Director and CEO, COMIO India

Sanjay Kalirona: Director and CEO, COMIO...

With the belief – “If you can’t, you must. If you must, you can” – Sanjay Kalirona brought a mid-segment Chinese smartphone brand, COMIO, into a highly cluttered Indian handset market. As chief executive officer (CEO) and director of COMIO India, it was like raising a child. Everything had to be started from scratch - building a team, taking care of the distribution, launches, promotions etc. The ability to work with teams, motivate and inspire them, and deal with fluctuating workplace demands helped him immensely.

In fact, it is a quality that has stood him in good stead over the 18 years he has spent in the industry. He was previously CEO at Zen Mobiles and prior to that, he spent 15 years with Intex Technologies India, heading different portfolios and helping grow the brand to the third position in mobile phone market in a very short period of time.

Kalirona has always followed an “open door” policy, irrespective of the department or role he was in. Be it new business development, strategic planning, distribution, sales and marketing, channel development or overseeing business operations at a pan-Indian leadership level, he has been accessible to his team members as well as others in the organisation. He takes feedback from others seriously and believes that an organisation’s growth hinges on the hard work of its employees. At the same time, he does not accept a “no” for anything, even if it means he has to step in to find a solution.

His current challenge is to make COMIO smartphones the most appreciated brand and the preferred choice in the mid-segment smartphone category even as India becomes one of the largest smartphone markets globally. He sees several exciting trends emerging in the industry. “In 2018, smartphones will have under-the-glass fingerprint sensors, iris scanners, face recognition capability, Bluetooth earbuds and headphones, and augmented reality,” he says. Glass-body smartphones are gaining popularity as curves are being introduced to the design, making smartphones more comfortable to hold. Apart from these trends, dual cameras and bezel-less displays are here to stay.

Outside of work, he likes to read, with Awaken the Giant Within by Anthony Robbins being his favourite book. He enjoys travelling with his wife, Sakshi, and their two school-going children, Mehak and Naman. Kalirona has a postgraduate diploma in business management from the Fortune Institute of International Business, New Delhi.
