DoT aims to clear TRAI recommendations by end-March 2018
The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) aims to clear the backlog of all recommendations sent in by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) as a result of consultation processes undertaken till December 31, 2017 by end March 2018. The move comes after recent directions from the telecom ministry as industry players were blaming the department of lackluster attitude towards accepting TRAI’s proposals.
Meanwhile, DoT has added that a lot of TRAI’s recommendations are already under various stages of consideration. Some of the key proposals that are likely to be finalised and taken to the Telecom Commission would include ease of doing business, net neutrality, cloud telephony and public Wi-Fi hotspots. Further, the government will take up a comprehensive list for consideration that include setting up of ombudsman as well as proposals for E and V bands, right-of-way rules and machine-to-machine (M2M) communications.
Earlier, a Parliamentary panel already expressed concern over government’s delay in setting up of an ombudsman in order to deal with consumer grievances in the telecom sector despite regulator’s recommendations.
